Tummy Time!! or Torture Time?!

Tummy time! I really dislike those two words. In our house we now refer to this necessary evil as torture time. My 3 month old has yet to get the hang of or enjoy her dreaded tummy time sessions. It’s so hard to watch her sweet head bobble and wobble back and forth as she screams and cries. I feel like I’m tormenting this tiny little human. For us tummy time resembles more of an ancient torture technique than a strength building exercise. Our sessions usually end with the inevitable face plant at which point we are both worn out. However everyday we repeat this painful process several times.Image result for tummy time

I understand the fundamental reasons for putting my child through such agony multiple times a day but I’m getting to the point where I am about to throw in the towel. I’ve tried all the tricks I know. Propping her over a pillow, laying in front of her so she can see my face, cheering and babbling, singing, shaking a toy but none of that seems to help. Is tummy time even really necessary? I mean, what’s the worst that can happen by not doing it? I doubt there are any long term consequences of taking a reprieve and forgoing tummy time for awhile. However I fear that once I stop I won’t want to start again.

I would really like to catch a ride on the fast track to tummy time success. The back of my daughters head is starting to look a little flat, actually very flat, and I know spending time on her tummy gives her flat little noggin some relief. It also helps to strengthen her core, neck and chest muscles so she will eventually not resemble a bobble head. I know it’s just a matter of time and she will eventually enjoy playing on her belly and seeing the world from a new angle. I just wish that time would hurry itself along!
